Glossary

The glossary contains a comprehensive list of A'chik (Garo) words used in the blog along with their meaning. This list has been made in order to help readers better understand the stories and to bridge any or all gaps in the process of translation.

  • Abi                               an elder sister

  • Am’pak                        a blanket prepared from the bark of certain tree, preferably of pakkram (coral) tree

  • Am’paltak                    a small bamboo mat

  • Bandi                           in Garo mythology, a very powerful demigod possessing herculean strength

  • Borang                         a treehouse

  • Goera                           the god of thunder and strength; a hero

  • Gura                            an earthen vessel; an earthen jar or pot

  • Jal’ang                         a bridge

  • Kilkok                          a cotton basket

  • Matchru                       a civet

  • Nokdechol                    a door on the side of the house

  • Nokma                         a Garo chief; a Garo man who is the owner of a land and is the head of a village

  • Rang                            a gong; a bell

  • Rasi                              horoscope

  • Skal                              a demon; a giant; an ogre; a monster; a cannibal
