The Sun and the Moon were sisters, Sun being the older one.
Each sister had plenty of children. The Sun had children as many as there are stars in the sky, while the Moon’s children were the actual stars in the sky.
One day, the Moon went up to her sister and proposed an idea.
“Abi (Older sister), every living creature on Earth is suffering because of us and our children. Humans and other animals cannot bear the heat our bodies give out. Let’s swallow up all of our children. If we don’t do this, all living beings will go extinct.”
The Sun also thought it was a good idea to save humankind and all creatures on Earth. She swallowed up all of her children.
However, the Moon was a sly one. She had hidden all of her children away.
A couple of days later, the Sun saw the stars and realised that her sister had lied to her. She was furious and started chasing after the Moon and the stars to swallow them whole.
The saying goes that for this reason, when the Sun comes up, we cannot see the Moon and the stars as they hide away in fear. They can only be seen once the Sun goes down again.
Once in a while, the Sun does catch up to the Moon. This is known as the lunar eclipse.
